Erosion of the rocks on Grand Manan has formed many unique features. One of the best known is the ' Hole in the Wall' located on the east side of the island in the Cambrian volcanic rocks of the Fish Head Gabbro. Geologic study on Grand Manan goes back to 1839 when New Brunswick's first Provincial Geologist, Abraham Gesner, visited Grand.

HIKING TRAILS - "Hole in the Wall". A continuous marked hiking trail runs from Swallowtail (eastern most tip of Northhead) all the way to the Whistle lighthouse on Northern Head. Doing the entire trail is a major adventure, but it is quite possible to break it into different parts for an enjoyable and less strenuous morning or afternoon hike.

From here, an easy walk to the village, quick access to the Red Trail and Swallowtail Lighthouse, and a 2 minute drive to the ferry terminal. There are 20 serviced sites in the trees around the Pond.

From the Canadian side (by car): Drive to Blacks Harbour (35 minutes outside of Saint John), then take the ferry to Grand Manan Island. Please find the most current ferry schedule here. The journey takes about 1.5 hours, and the cost per car is C$ 39.25 for non residents, excluding the driver, per trip.
